This Time We Love Page 15
He tossed the cable to a table, and turned his back, distressed. “They’ll be wanting me to come back and take over management.”
Max said, “I’ll have to, of course. I always knew that sooner or later it’d come to this. There’s a thousand people working for Fielding Toys, including a dozen or so Fieldings.” He looked at her, his face tight. “Look, Nadine. Are you sure you won’t marry me?”
She looked briskly at her watch again. “I have exactly three minutes to talk to you, then I must be off. Very well, I admit I love you. Obviously, you have to return to the States immediately. This production, Horatius, will be completed by October 1st. I’m under contract, and I’ve never run out on a contract in my life. When it’s finished, I’ll get in touch with you at Fielding Toys and I’ll give you a chance to talk me into it if you still want me as your own private production secretary and full-time wife. We can discuss a marriage contract at that time.”
She wound it up in characteristic briskness. “The three minutes are up. Now, kiss me quickly.” She held up her pert mouth, kissed him smartly, wheeled and was gone.
